It’s Blueberry Time!

Summer is here, and there’s nothing quite like the refreshing taste of berries during this hot month of July. Luckily, blueberry season is at its peak this month. So much so, that July is nicknamed National Blueberry Month! But blueberries aren’t just praised for their refreshing summery flavor. They also have numerous amounts of health benefits and are labeled one of the BEST health and superfoods available. Here are some of the health properties of blueberries:

-Antioxidants – Blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity of any fruit or vegetable. Antioxidants are important for protecting the body from damaging radicals, and oxidative damage, therefore protecting the body from heart attacks, cancer, and other diseases.

-Anti-Aging- Due to the antioxidants within the blueberries, there will be more protection against damaging radicals and therefore, less of the oxidative damage responsible for aging.

-Boosting Collagen- Two of the antioxidants within blueberries are Vitamin C and Anthocyanin. Both of these may contribute to natural collagen production and therefore, healthier skin.

-Acne/Eczema/Psoriasis Reduction- Since acne and other skin conditions may be due to inflammation, the anti-inflammatory properties of blueberries may also be beneficial to reducing the likelihood of inflammation-induced skin issues.

-Brain Health- These berries aid in brain health by supporting brain function and delaying mental decline. Some studies performed on animals have concluded that blueberries may also affect areas of the brain, essential for intelligence.

-Regulating Sugar- On the Glycemic Index, blueberries are very low. So for people with diabetes, hyperglycemia, or just trying to be healthier, blueberries are the ideal fruit. Real-life example: In a study of 32 obese people with insulin resistance, two blueberry smoothies daily improved their insulin sensitivity.

-Anti-adhesives- Blueberries boost the substances in your body that help prevent bad bacteria like E. coli from binding to the bladder in the body. While there is not much research on this yet, scientists can conclude that this may lead to UTI prevention.

-Muscle Recovery- Some studies have researched the effects of blueberries on muscle recovery post-workout. These results concluded that there may be a correlation between blueberry consumption and accelerated muscle recovery time.

-Improve Circulation- Blueberry consumption is linked to improved blood circulation. Studies have shown that regular consumption of blueberries improves blood vessel function while decreasing systolic blood pressure.

-Gut Health- Fiber is important for supporting a healthy gut microbiome. Blueberries are an excellent source of fiber, containing approximately 4 grams per 8 ounces.

It’s amazing how such a small fruit can have such large medicinal properties. Next time you’re headed to your summer beach day, be sure to grab some local berries on your way out! Just another summer perk to look forward to!
